As part of the Solidarity Shores – Empowering Communities for Sustainable Fish and Seafood Resources project, we took part in a comprehensive volunteering experience focused on the environment and sustainability in the Galicia region of Spain between 4 May and 7 June, together with young volunteers from different countries.
Implemented within the framework of the European Union’s European Solidarity Corps, the project aims to empower young people and coastal communities to address environmental and social challenges affecting marine ecosystems, support sustainable fisheries, protect biodiversity, and promote circular economy solutions. Protecting the Seas Means Protecting the Future
Through the environmental activities carried out during the project, including coastal clean-ups, waste separation, environmental awareness activities, and cooperation with local communities, we had the opportunity to experience first-hand that protecting marine ecosystems is not only an environmental issue, but also a social and economic one.
In regions such as Galicia, where fishing and seafood play an important role in the lives and livelihoods of coastal communities, the health of the seas is directly connected to people’s sources of income. For this reason, tackling marine pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss also means safeguarding the future of local communities.
SOLIDMAR’s approach of combining traditional knowledge with innovative solutions also helped us recognise the importance of local experience in the sustainable use of marine resources. (solidmar.eu)
Small Steps, Shared Impact
One of the most important lessons we gained throughout the project was a better understanding of how small actions in our daily lives can affect the environment.
Separating waste correctly, reducing plastic consumption, reusing materials whenever possible, and raising awareness among the people around us about sustainable living may seem like small individual steps, but on a broader social scale, they can become the starting point for meaningful change.
This experience also showed us that environmental challenges know no borders. Working together with volunteers from different countries towards a common goal helped us improve our communication, teamwork, sense of responsibility, and ability to cooperate with people from different cultural backgrounds.
From Solidarity to a Sustainable Future
The Solidarity Shores experience demonstrated that environmental volunteering is not limited to contributing to nature; it is also a powerful space for solidarity that brings individuals, communities, and different cultures together around a shared purpose.
An awareness that begins with picking up a single piece of plastic from a beach can grow into a much broader environmental movement through the collective efforts of people from different countries.
The experience we shared between 4 May and 7 June once again showed us that a sustainable future can only be achieved through knowledge, solidarity, responsibility, and collective action.
Because protecting the seas means protecting not only the present, but also the lives of future generations.
